Thermen Bussloo: a day in the Netherlands' big woodland sauna resort
Lakeside woodland, a full aufguss programme and a textile-free sauna world — what an ordinary day at Thermen Bussloo in Gelderland is actually like.

Where it is
Thermen Bussloo sits in woodland beside the Bussloo recreational lake in Voorst, Gelderland, about halfway between Apeldoorn and Zutphen and a comfortable drive from Amsterdam or Utrecht. It is one of the largest wellness resorts in the country, and the setting does a lot of the work: most of the outdoor saunas and cold plunges face straight into trees.
How a Dutch sauna day works
If you have only ever used a hotel sauna, the Dutch thermen format takes a moment to learn. You pay for entry to the whole complex for the day rather than for a slot. You change, leave your clothes in a locker, and move around the sauna world nude with a towel to sit on and a robe for the walkways, the restaurant and the garden paths. Nobody is in swimwear in the sauna zones, and that consistency is exactly what makes it unselfconscious.
As in nearly every Dutch thermen, bathing is done without swimwear; a small number of announced swimwear days are the exception rather than the rule, so check the calendar if you would prefer one.
What's on site
Expect a full circuit rather than a single cabin: Finnish saunas at different temperatures, steam rooms, indoor and outdoor thermal baths, cold plunges, rest areas and a beauty centre, plus restaurants where a robe is the dress code.
The daily aufguss programme is the thing to plan around. An aufguss is a scented steam ritual run by a sauna master who pours infusions on the stones and circulates the heat with a towel, in rounds that build. Sessions run to a timetable through the day, they fill up, and the good ones have a queue five minutes before the door closes.

Practical notes
It is an adults-only venue, so no children. Bring two towels and a robe, or rent them at reception. Weekday mornings are by far the quietest; Saturday afternoons are the busiest hours of the week. Thermen Bussloo does not publish a simple walk-up day rate openly — prices move with packages and dates — so book on the resort's own site rather than guessing, and reserve treatments at the same time.
If you want the same format closer to the coast or with a hotel attached, Zwaluwhoeve near Harderwijk is the obvious alternative, and Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg is the one Dutch spa fed by a genuine thermal mineral spring.
